Don't miss this warm-hearted, irreverent, zany and brilliantly imaginative show!
Stageworks Theatre announces its fifth show of the 2017-2018 season, Crimes of the Heart, written by Beth Henley and directed by Sam Martinez. The show runs March 2 through March 25, 2018.
Set in Hazlehurst, Mississippi, three Magrath sisters have gathered to await news of the family patriarch, their grandfather, who is living out his last hours in the local hospital.
Lenny, the oldest sister, is unmarried at thirty and facing diminishing marital prospects; Meg, the middle sister, who quickly outgrew Hazlehurst, is back after a failed singing career on the West Coast; while Babe, the youngest, is out on bail after having shot her husband in the stomach. Their troubles, grave and yet, somehow, hilarious, are highlighted by their priggish cousin, Chick, and by the awkward young lawyer who tries to keep Babe out of jail while helpless not to fall in love with her.
Winner of the 1981 Pulitzer Prize and the New York Drama Critics Circle Award. Warm-hearted, irreverent, zany and brilliantly imaginative, the play teems with humanity and humor as it examines the plight of three young Mississippi sisters betrayed by their passions.
Martinez is excited to make this show unique and is encouraged by the depth of women's roles.
"As a director, you are always drawn to strong characters and interesting stories," said Martinez.
"Crimes of the Heart has both. As an actor I hear a lot that there are not enough strong women roles. This show has four extremely well-written female characters.
"There have been thousands of productions of this show, but that is the nature of a good, solid script. What makes our production unique is that this is a whole new combination of directors and actors. The dynamic of the group we have assembled is what will give the script a new flavor and perspective. Each rehearsal is a new discovery for my actors and they are having a blast just taking the journey with the characters."
Behind the scenes the production team includes Sam Martinez (director), Michael Montgomery (artistic director/producer), Nikki Sax (stage manager), Deb Shultz (scenic design), Katie Harrison (costume design).
On stage, the cast includes Austin Heps (Doc), Adam Harkay (Barnaby), Carrie Lee Sparks (Lenny), Kalin Black (Meg), Kristen Malisewski (Babe), and Natalie Lerner (Chick).
