Bring a new stuffed animal with you to Oliver! to support area kids in crisis.
The cast and crew of Oliver! request that you support the memory of a special young lady from our area.
On May 30, 2009, thirteen year-old Julia Marie Briggs, a former student of Farney Elementary, Black Elementary, and Hamilton Middle School, suddenly and very unexpectedly passed away from Mediastinal Lymphoma (a very rare and aggressive cancer).
Julia was an energetic, charismatic, inspirational, and caring leader who demonstrated her leadership through athletics and community service. In addition to playing lacrosse with the Cy-Fair Iron Maidens, Julia played basketball, ran cross country and was also actively involved in the Girl Scouts.
Prior to her passing, Julia was beginning her quest to attain the Silver Award for Girl Scouts. Her idea was to gather stuffed animals for the Houston Police Department’s homicide detectives to give to children to hold for comfort in times of crisis.
Each year, in her honor, her family and friends hold a stuffed animal drive to keep her Silver Award effort thriving called the Burning Flower Memorial. Last year they collected over 4,000 new stuffed animals, in cooperation with Cy-Fair Iron Maidens Lacrosse and Girl Scouts of Americas that were in turn donated to benefit the Houston Police Department, Child Advocates, and area law enforcement agencies. Through Julia’s vision and your generosity, children whose lives have been touched by tragedy will be comforted and lifted up.
To support this family, we are asking attendees to bring one NEW stuffed animal to the Oliver! performances.
Every stuffed animal counts. This simple act of giving and sending positive thoughts is greatly appreciated. Due to restrictions, please only bring new stuffed animals. We cannot accept used or even "gently used" items.
Join us at Oliver! opening November 25, 2016 and bring a new stuffed animal!
