Guys and Dolls JR. is an adaptation of the show considered by many to be the perfect musical comedy. Its namesake ran for 1,200 performances when it opened on Broadway in 1950, and won numerous Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Frank Loesser's brassy, immortal score and witty book makes Guys and Dolls JR. a perennial crowd pleaser.
Set in Damon Runyon's New York City, Guys and Dolls JR. follows gambler, Nathan Detroit, as he tries to find the cash to set up the biggest crap game in town while the authorities breathe down his neck. Meanwhile, his girlfriend and nightclub performer, Adelaide, laments that they've been engaged for fourteen years without ever getting married. Nathan turns to fellow gambler, Sky Masterson, for the dough, but Sky ends up chasing the straight-laced missionary, Sarah Brown. Guys and Dolls JR. takes us from the heart of Times Square to the cafes of Havana, but everyone eventually ends up right where they belong.
Instructor/Director: Ryan Scarlata
For the serious actor ages 13-19, we are proud to announce our spring Teen Conservatory. This program seeks students who are ready to work and is a must for any student considering auditioning for college theatrical programs.
This new program provides training that goes more in-depth and can provide more individualized attention than most high school programs due to much lower student to teacher ratios. Our conservatory is an audition-based, skills-first program, that will also perform a show. If you are interested in receiving directed instruction with time slotted specifically to hone your acting, dancing and vocal work, this is your program. Regardless of your role in the show, expect your skills to strengthen and start to shine in a way that is unique to your unique instrument - your body.
This semester, the Conservatory will present Guys and Dolls on the Garza Mainstage in late May, led by director and international award-winning theatre educator Ryan Scarlata. Students in the conservatory will meet three days per week for combined rehearsal and skills classes, merging high-level training with a real-world professional experience.
