(April 3, 2017) Stageworks Theatre is holding canine auditions for its upcoming production of the musical The Wizard of Oz, directed by Adam Delka, to be performed live at the Berry Center theatre in Cypress July 21- August 6.
Stageworks is looking for a small Cairn Terrier that is similar to the dog from the original 1939 MGM film. The dog is preferred to be small, friendly, willing to be carried in a basket and uneasily startled.
"We're excited for another opportunity to have a dog join our cast," said Julie Montgomery, member of the board of directors for Stageworks Theatre. "We have cast dogs for our productions of Annie in 2013 and Peter Pan in 2014. We had the best time working with the pups and their owners."
Once cast, Toto and owner will need to attend some, but not all rehearsals, which will be held at Stageworks Theatre, 10760 Grant Road Houston, Texas 77070, throughout May - July. The dog will need to be accompanied by its owner at the Berry Center during all performances, so it would be ideal for that person to enjoy a theatre setting and have an understanding of long, and or, late night rehearsals and performances.
If you are a fan of theatre and think your dog would be the perfect match to play Dorothy's best friend, please request an audition by submitting the following to Michael Montgomery, Artistic Director at email@example.com:
a picture or video of your dog
some background information (i.e. age, temperament, interesting facts)
your personal interest in theatre and why you both would enjoy being a part of this classic production.
"Because the show has such a large cast, it's the perfect opportunity for the whole family to be involved. Even Fido!" Montgomery said.
"Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore." That famous phrase Dorothy says after she lands in Munchkinland just wouldn't be the same without her beloved Toto. Now, you and your dog can be a part of the magical journey to Oz.
