The Producers to open at Stageworks

Houston - (February 20, 2017) Stageworks Theatre presents its fifth production of the season, The Producers, by Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan, music and Lyrics by Mel Brooks. Directed by Dru Wiser, music direction by Chelsea Lerner, and choreography by Adam Delka, the show runs March 17 - April 9, 2017 on the Garza Mainstage.

When a scheming producer and his mousy accountant aim to produce the biggest flop on Broadway, you are guaranteed to have a laugh-out-loud spectacle! For anyone familiar with Mel Brooks' classic cult comedy film, the names Bialystock and Bloom should strike terror and hysteria. Now as a big Broadway musical, The Producers once again sets the standard for modern, outrageous, in-your-face humor. It is a truly "boffo" hit, winning a record twelve Tony Awards.

But comedy isn’t all The Producers has to offer. Director Dru Wiser is not only encouraged by the show, but uplifted as well.

“One might say the director's job is to define the emotion behind a show,” said Wiser. “If that is indeed true, my intent is to provoke joy among the audience. With all the darkness in the world, my hope is for your Stageworks’ theatre experience to be an escape from that darkness. I look at the stage as a creative outlet; a place to play and pretend. I also believe our team is blessed with a passion for performing and creating. I look at a performance as a gift both to an audience member, as well as an actor. Candidly, Mel Brooks allows us to "go there" with this satire. I encourage you as an audience to look on the bright side of life and let our talented production team and cast take you away from the world for two hours.”

Among the talented actors leading the hilarity are Michael Morrison (Max) and JT Fischer (Leo). This is Michael’s debut role at Stageworks and JT has spent a lot of time on the Stageworks’ stage. Audiences will remember him most recently as the artful Dodger in OLIVER and as the bad seed, Chuck, in FOOTLOOSE. Mandy Kolbaba (Ulla), always the vixen, last stunned audiences at Stageworks as Lola in DAMN YANKEES. Taylor Fisher (Roger), is a Stageworks’ favorite recently playing the villainous Bill Sykes in OLIVER! and the cross-dressing Audrey II in LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS. Bryon Gable (Franz), will also be making his debut at Stageworks.

Performances of The Producers will take place at Stageworks Theatre on The Garza Mainstage located at 10760 Grant Rd. Houston, Texas, 77070. Performances are Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30 PM, with Sunday matinees at 3 P.M. Tickets go on sale Jan. 17 and can be purchased online at stageworkstx.org or by phone at 281-587-6100.
