Stageworks Theatre announces open auditions for the smash hit Roald Dahl’s Matilda, the Musical playing July 14 - July 30, 2023.
Inspired by the twisted genius of Roald Dahl, the multiple Tony Award-winning Roald Dahl's Matilda The Musical is the captivating masterpiece from the Royal Shakespeare Company that revels in the anarchy of childhood, the power of imagination and the inspiring story of a girl who dreams of a better life.
With book by Dennis Kelly and original songs by Tim Minchin, Matilda has won 47 international awards and continues to thrill sold-out audiences of all ages around the world.
Packed with high-energy dance numbers, catchy songs and an unforgettable star turn for a young actress, Matilda is a joyous power romp that children and adults alike will be thrilled and delighted by the story of the special little girl with an extraordinary imagination.

Performances: July 14-July 30 (12 shows: 9 shows Fridays and Saturday 7:30pm, Saturday matinees 2pm, Sunday matinees 2pm). Additional Shows are possible on Thursday, July 20 & 27.

Rehearsals (at Stageworks until tech week): May 15-July 13. Generally Monday – Thursday 7-10pm, and Sundays 1-6pm. Not all actors will be called for each rehearsal. Minimal conflicts accepted, but none after July 4.

Tech Week: July 5-July 13. No conflicts accepted and actors should be prepared for long days and evenings.

Inclusive Casting: The creative team is committed to casting practices that advance diversity and inclusion. All ethnicities, types, and abilities will be considered for every role with the exception of roles on which the storyline is dependent on a particular race or gender. Any such exceptions will be noted specifically in the character breakdown below. Genders listed in the breakdown below are specific to the pronouns used in the script, however the creative team may consider any gender identity for roles provided that the performer can execute the vocal and acting requirements.

Additional Information: Actors must be at least eight years old on the date of the first audition. The creative team reserves the right to cast without callbacks.

HOW TO AUDITION
All audition appointments are now full. Video auditions will be accepted until 8pm on Saturday, March 25. If you'd like, you may attend one of the times below and be on standby. We will do our best to get standby actors seen by the production staff, but cannot make any guarantees. Standby times are 10am on Saturday, March 25 and 2pm on Sunday, March 26. Online registration is required to audition. Register for your audition here.
Callbacks will be held on Sunday, March 26, 6pm – 10pm and on Monday, March 27 7pm – 10pm.

Prepare one (1) song of no more than 32 bars or two (2) contrasting song selections of 16 bars each. Selection(s) may be from the show or a selection in the style of the show that demonstrates your acting and singing skills. ***An accompanist is only available by request. Otherwise, please use a track on your phone or other device. A speaker will be provided.

Unable attend audition? We’d much prefer to see you in person, but we’ll accept video auditions until March 24. Record your audition first as a Vimeo or YouTube link and then register as instructed above and submit your link as part of your registration. (please provide password if needed).

Matilda Wormwood - Female. An imaginative girl who is clever, wise far beyond her years. Stage Age: 8-10. Vocal Range: A3-D5.
Miss Agatha Trunchbull – Female Presenting. The tyrannical headmistress at Matilda’s school who despises children. Stage Age: 30-55. Vocal Range: A2-G4.
Miss Honey – Female. Matilda’s kindhearted teacher. Tired of living in fear under Miss Trunchbull. Stage Age: 25-40. Vocal Range: F3-D5.
Mr. Wormwood - Male. Matilda’s uncaring father. An over-the-top slimy, greedy used-car salesman. Stage Age: 30-45. Vocal Range: D3-A4.
Mrs. Wormwood - Female. Matilda’s self-absorbed, negligent over-the-top mother and an amateur ballroom dancer. Stage Age: 30-45. Vocal Range: A3-F5. Strong dancer type.
Michael Wormwood - Male. Matilda’s older brother. He is not very bright and favored by their parents. Stage Age: 12-18. Vocal Range: C4-E5.
Mrs. Phelps – Female Presenting. A sweet, pragmatic librarian and Matilda’s adult friend. Stage Age: 25-60.
Lavender – Female. Matilda’s classmate and friend. Stage Age: 8-12. Vocal Range: Flex. Strong actor. Strong actor, singer, dancer.
Bruce - Male. Matilda’s classmate and lover of chocolate cake. Stage Age: 8-12. Vocal Range: Flex. Strong actor, singer, dancer.

Teen Ensemble (MS/HS) – Male/Female Presenting. Actors, Dancers, Singers in Matilda’s school. Lots of dancing! Stage Age: 12+. Vocal Range: Flex.
The Escapologist - Male Presenting. A character in Matilda’s story who comes to life in her imagination. Likely cast as a track role (Swing). Stage Age: 25-40. Vocal Range: C3-E4. Strong dancer, actor.
The Acrobat – Female Presenting. A character in a story Matilda who comes to life in her imagination. Stage Age: 25-40. Vocal Range: D4-A4. Must be able to perform tricks. Strong actor.
Rudolpho – Male Presenting. Mrs. Wormwood’s over-the-top ballroom dance partner and instructors. Likely cast as a track role. Stage Age: 20-45. Vocal Range: D#3-A4. Strong Dancer.
Doctor - Male Presenting. Mrs. Wormwood’s Doctor when she goes into Labor with Matilda. Likely cast as a track role. Stage Age: 25-45. Vocal Range: C3-A4.
