Into the Woods, Jr
July 24, 2021
3:30pm - 6:00pm
We are so excited to get to work on this fun (and challenging) show… that we are going to get this party started a little early. We will be holding auditions on Saturday July 24th, from 3:30-6:00pm at Stageworks. We ask that unvaccinated students are masked. They will be allowed to remove their masks to sing when they are called in.
Holding auditions ahead of time will allow your student to start becoming familiar with their material in the weeks leading up to the camp.
How to Prepare
For the audition, we would like each student to prepare and memorize two selections of music.
EVERYONE should learn “Finale Part 6” measures 31-54. This starts on page 96 of your script, and begins with the lyrics “To be happy, and forever…..into the woods to lift the spell”
Everyone should choose ONE of the following cuts of music to prepare as well:
“Giants in the sky” measures 15-end, page 53, lyrics “you’re free to do whatever pleases you-end”
“Stay with me” measures 15-end, starts page 75, “princes wait there in the world….with me”
Linked you will find the cut tracks to practice with. One includes guide vocals and will be helpful while you are learning the music. Once you think you’ve got it- switch to the accompaniment (no guide vocals). This is what we will use in the auditions. Each track contains some lead in music to get you oriented- just start singing on the lyrics indicated above :)
Be fully memorized! Nerves can make lyrics fly right out of your brain if they aren’t locked in there really well.
Think about what character you'd like to be considered for. There are no limitations. We will even be gender bending some roles.
Once you know who you are “going for” make sure you are acting out your music selections as that character! How do you think that character stands? Sounds? What is it they want from the audience? Are they trying to scare them? Get help from them? Persuade them? Make a choice!
And again… Make a choice! Make a BIG choice! Just go for it :) Your job in an audition is NOT to guess what we want to see...your job is to show us the BEST you’ve got so that we can make a good decision.
Come to auditions dressed comfortably so that you can move. Close toed shoes please- no slide-ons.
We strongly recommend you make every effort to participate in the auditions in person, but if you have a conflict that will prohibit you from participating, please record your audition and send a link of it to Amy Hohulin directly.
A Final Note
Casting a show is like putting together a giant puzzle. Not being cast in a particular role doesn’t mean you didn't do an amazing job- it just means for the show to function as a whole, you were needed in a different spot. The good news is- this is an awesome ensemble show, and there are no parts that are unimportant. I can’t wait to see what you bring to the audition room… as always, reach out if you have any questions!
